Top Free Satellite Imagery Sources

There are a variety of satellite imagery sources available for free to download. Some of the more popular ones include the Copernicus Open Access Hub, the Sentinel Hub, and the LandViewer. However, there are many others that are not as well known or well maintained, which can be a real drawback. Fortunately, I have compiled a list of some of my favorite free sources.

1. INPE Image Catalog

The INPE Image Catalog is one of the top sources for free satellite imagery. It provides users with data from several countries. This includes Brazil, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The database allows you to access satellite images in various formats. You can download high-resolution photos, low-resolution images, and medium-resolution photographs. There are also images of natural disasters.

When using the INPE Image Catalogue, you will be asked to set up an account. Once you’ve done that, you can search by continent, country, and other criteria. You can even request customized data. However, you will have to make sure you have an email address to respond to.

While there are many great open sources for satellite images, the INPE Image Catalog is an excellent resource for South America. It also has satellite images for Africa and the United Kingdom.

If you’re looking for a more comprehensive satellite image source, check out the ALOS 3D World catalog. It contains over three million images. You can browse by continent and country, and you can also filter your results by time, date, and cloud cover.

2. Copernicus Open Access Hub

Copernicus Open Access Hub (COAH) provides asynchronous access to historic and upcoming Sentinel data. All data is available for download through a secure protocol. This service is available to both public and commercial organizations. There is a simple registration process.

COAH offers a variety of access portals for searching, downloading, and analyzing Sentinel data. These include an online portal and two dedicated APIs.

The Copernicus Data Hub distribution service has reached 500 PB of Sentinel data. This is a record amount of data. It is expected to continue its operations through June 2023. Until then, all Copernicus data will be available through the data hubs.

Copernicus Data Hubs are online portals that allow you to find, explore, and download Copernicus data. In order to use the service, you must register and accept the general Terms and Conditions. 3. Sentinel Hub

Sentinel Hub is a cloud-based GIS platform that provides access to a wide variety of satellite imagery. It includes imagery from Envisat, MODIS, and other satellite missions.

The EO Browser is the hub of the Sentinel Hub, providing a single place to view and download a wide range of satellite data. Users can search by UUID, data product, or other criteria. For example, users can search by the land cover in Europe or the water level in the Caribbean Sea.

The EO Browser includes the unabridged collections of all Sentinel missions. These include Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, and Landsat 5.

In addition to satellite imagery, the Sentinel Hub offers access to GIBS, PlantScope, and other Earth observing products. In addition, the site has documentation, a list of available data collections, and educational resources.

The EO Browser is a free service that allows users to search, explore, and visualize Earth observation data. This tool also allows users to perform simple image analysis.

4. LandViewer

LandViewer is a satellite imagery database, which provides access to collections of high-resolution satellite images. Its platform provides quick and convenient searches across the globe. Users can also create and share animated stories using satellite images.

In addition to its satellite imagery, LandViewer offers tools to process and analyze the data. It also includes time series data analysis capabilities.
