SUUNTO X10M Wrist-Top GPS Computer Watch Review

SUUNTO X10M Wrist-Top GPS Computer Watch Review

Adventure trekking has always been one of my favorite activities and if the hiking trip is supported by GPS navigation, the margin for error is minimized! Perhaps the producers of Suunto X10 know this! My search for a modest and portable GPS navigation device for my hiking expeditions really came to an end with the new Suunto X10. Now that I have used it for a couple of months, I am quite satisfied and glad to key down a short review of what exactly I found in this small but sexy GPS NAVIGATION WATCH!

SUUNTO X10 Technical Description

The new Suunto x10m smartwatch has benefited from performance upgrades that make it faster, more powerful, and more reliable.

Performance is improved because it locates positions faster than the older model of the Suunto GPS watch line. Thus, during difficult conditions (under thick foliage, etc.) the new Suunto x10m smartwatch delivers more reliable indications.

Suunto x10m GPS smartwatch is hands-free so you can focus on the action. It records waypoints and routes so excursions can be studied and analyzed at home on a computer.

The Suunto x10m GPS smartwatch watch includes an altimeter, barometer, digital compass, thermometer, watch, and stopwatch functions. It’s a real sleek and sporty wrist computer.

SUUNTO X10M Wrist-Top GPS Computer Watch

  • Save your route and share it on Google Earth ™
  • The altimeter, barometer and compass functions
  • Take your time with longer battery life
  • Water resistant up to 100 meters

The Hardware talk:

To start off, the Suunto X10 is a smart and portable GPS navigation device that plays a dual role. The sleek and sexy curves of the device surely call for some attention. Although it is a bit heavy, you can use it as a watch for your day to day use, and trust me, you are going to get accustomed to the weight of the device. It uses a state of the art and durable plastic with small metal parts scattered here and there. The first metal you will notice is the buckle. As far as the battery is concerned, the Suunto X10 is superior to the prior versions and the battery run time has increased by 33%. The life expectancy of the battery is 5-7 hours with all the functions running in tandem. I mean: heavy GPS usage, data storage, compass functions, and backlight- all running at a time and continuously. However, it will survive for 3 long months (claimed by the manufacturer) with minimal usage which includes the only date and/or Baro/Alti mode! The hardware of Suunto X10 is resistant to water up to a depth of 100 meters and thus if rain or water evokes your desire to get wet, feel free to do so.

The Software Talk:

There is nothing really interesting that I encountered. It only allows me to edit way point or add some new way points on my trip. Planning a trip on Google Earth and then importing it back to the device is not possible but it surely allowed me to export my routes and view them on Google Earth. For the purpose of planning I had to bring the maps in any of the following image formats: .gif, .bmp or .jpg. There is another alternative as well! I can manually draw the maps but I accept that I hate drawing maps!

Words on Features:

Keying an exhaustive list of the features available on this GPS navigation system is really out of the scope. However, some of the features are discussed below:

Barometer:

When I turn on the barometer screen, it allows me to see the barometric pressure of the place at the sea level in that particular geographical region. The presentation is graphical and the barometric pressure development in the last six hours in that particular area is shown. The presentation is shown every 15 minutes.

Altitude:

Suunto X10 is fully capable of measuring the altitude of a place from barometric pressure and the calculations are far more accurate than those made by the GPS. It is to be borne in mind that changes in the barometric pressure can lead to change in altitude.

Alarm:

Now, fellow, you cannot really afford to think of this as a simple alarm to pull you out of your dreams. The watch can actually be used to set altitude and weather alarms. The barometric alarm always informs me of any changes in the level of barometric pressure.

Compass

Want to save the battery life? Use this compass and turn off the GPS. Well, you need to know how to use a compass in the first place. The compass has an additional feature called a bearing lock. Fix the target bearing and hit ‘Start’. Now follow the destination and you can see your deviations from your target point. That is charming I must say!

Navigation

In this particular model, you can create waypoints as well as routes by using your computer or while you are on the go! The activity mode will show the speed, location, etc but in navigation mode, you can see the distance to be covered, the direction to be followed, the estimated time for your arrival for every single waypoint on the route.

Conclusion

SUUNTO X10M Wrist-Top GPS Computer Watch

Suunto X10 is a hi-tech gadget for GPS navigation at higher altitudes. There is hardly any drawback to be pointed out and if you claim that the inability to import routes from Google Earth is a shortcoming, I will say that you are expecting way too much. Be happy with the extraordinary features of the Suunto X10! Trust me, I am happy!

Corne Said :

I have had my X10M now for a year and two months. I have sent the watch in for repairs as my bezel pealed off and the bezel kept clipping out. Suunto repaired it and after this, my battery time was way down, so I sent it back again as they did something wrong in the repair process. Suunto then replaced my watch with a new one! The problem is two days later the new watch’s bezel started un-clipping again! Well to say the least my new watch is now back for repairs again:-( This is a great watch but I would not recommend it as the bezel is a great problem (That Suunto does not want to acknowledge) and you cannot keep sending a watch to the repair center for a new bezel every month for the rest of your life.

Garmin GPSMAP 66st GPS Review

Garmin GPSMAP 66st GPS Review

Our Verdict

The Garmin GPSMAP 66st is really a suped-up rendition of different models offered inside the generally very good quality GPSMAP arrangement — effectively acquiring our Editors’ Choice honor. The GPSMAP 66st uses a high-powered, quad-helix antenna, and includes an astounding 16 GB of memory (not counting the additional microSD cards you’ll increase quadruple the storage.) This unit can map thousands of waypoints, provide satellite imagery, and update you on the weather, either on the device or linked to your phone. While the essential functions were intuitive, a number of the more advanced features — just like the Bluetooth connectivity — were complicated to setup. But if you recognize your way around GPS units, and are trying to find a highly capable device for logging tons of knowledge, this could be your top choice.

Performance Comparison Products Table

In the field, we found the Garmin GPSMAP 66st to measure up to its reputation. When mapping old mountain biking trails in Southwestern Utah, we were ready to leave and simply devour the trail again, instead of being forever lost among the ocean of junipers.

Ease of Use

The GPSMAP 66st was one of the simplest units to use straight from the get-go that we tested. All the buttons are large and have easy to read labels on all. Unlike a number of the opposite units, the 66st buttons are pretty straightforward and there are enough of them for every to possess a definite function during a particular setting.

While some folks may prefer a touchscreen, we actually liked the large buttons on this unit, especially in the cold. The Garmin GPSMAP 66st functionality works great no matter the conditions, whether it’s freezing or wet. The buttons are large enough to push with gloves on, and there is no touch screen to urge wet and inoperable. Like most of Garmin‘s handheld units, it’s rated to IPX7 water resistance, which suggests it’s good to travel for rainstorms or snow, just not full immersion.

As the functions get more in-depth, the controls do get more complicated, but that’s to be expected. some of the blending with different gadgets and applications took huge loads of to and fro enlistment and matching, which was an issue, however just a one-time bother.

Display Quality

With the transflective TFT display on a three-inch screen, the Garmin 66st model is basically readable, even in sunlight, which is basically nice on snow or on a bright, sunny day.

The 240 x 400-pixel display is good when viewing photos or satellite imagery on the germander speedwell function, but otherwise, we’d be hard-pressed to inform much of a difference otherwise. Unlike the touchscreens, the Garmin GPSMAP 66st doesn’t rotate from a portrait view, but it wouldn’t really add up to on this unit.

Speed

Like most of the button-operated GPS units we tested, the Garmin 66st isn’t quite as responsive in function as a number of the touch-screen units we tested, but it wasn’t slow enough to be noticeable or create any issues from the slight lag.

It did actually draw maps quite fast, fast enough for the maps to be redrawn almost as fast as a pan across the map, counting on the size . It can also undergo tons of knowledge quickly, and it doesn’t take much time loaded new big route files or germander speedwell satellite images.

Weight and Size

At eight ounces, the 66st is one of the heaviest units within the review. On one hand, eight ounces isn’t that much. On the opposite hand, it’s half a pound, which looks like tons when considering something that’s the dimensions of your cellphone.

It fits into most jacket pockets, but it’s large enough that hiking with it during a pants pocket is annoying. this is often definitely not the unit for the ultra lighters out there, but rather a significant tool for tons of data gathering.

Versatility

The Garmin GPSMAP 66st may be a highly versatile and accurate GPS unit. It’s exact, simple to utilize, and appears to be very bombproof. The battery pack is only two AA’s, which, although not rechargeable, are easily found around the world. Lithium batteries make this thing cold-resistant too, and with the large buttons, it works great for ski touring or other wet and cold activities. we expect this thing might be utilized in any given situation where the simplest thing about the Garmin 66st Model is that the way Garmin paired accuracy, ease-of-use, and a heaping helping of memory. For professionals who got to use tons of knowledge on a GPS unit, but do not have the allow a Trimble, this is often an honest option. With the 64GB microSD cards now available, the Garmin 66st GPS model could carry up to 80GB, which is much quiet we expect we could ever use within the lifetime of a unit, without deleting anything. handheld GPS is acceptable.

Provided you’re willing to distribute for a high-end GPS unit, this thing will go anywhere. Skiing, backpacking, fieldwork, you name it. It is often put in expedition mode to save lots of battery life on long trips; and maybe soaked, knocked, dropped, and therefore the thing keeps kicking. With the military-built specifications, this thing is rugged, and if you add a lithium battery pack the GPSMAP 66st will work in nearly any environment.

Value

The GPSMAP 66st is one of the foremost expensive units in our review. the sole feature that might have made this costlier may be a touch screen. If you are doing need the functionality of the Garmin 66st Model, then it’s worthwhile needless to say. If you propose downloading your own maps anyway, you’ll knock off a number of the value and just get the 66s model, for what looks like a reasonable bargain considering the potential of this line.

Conclusion

Garmin GPSMAP 66st GPS Model

For a very capable, really durable GPS unit, the GPSMAP 66st GPS model is a superb choice. It holds more data than anyone but a very dedicated field researcher on an extended trip could use, can hook up with smartphones and wifi, and may view the planet via maps or satellite imaging. The GPSMAP 66st isn’t cheap, but you get what you pay for: a burly, accurate, featured unit; ok to earn the Editors’ Choice Award.

MIO Spirit 8670 LM FEU Car Navigation System Review

MIO Spirit 8670 LM FEU Car Navigation System Review

MIO Spirit 8670 LM GPS, The first thing that comes to my mind when I look at a GPS device is that it will help you with navigation. That is true because a GPS device was originally designed for that purpose. I was really surprised when I came across a GPS device with additional features like video, music, and contacts! Well, nothing is impossible-it is technology! I hope you have seen the TERMINATOR-series by Arnold Schwarzenegger-everything is possible!

Mio seems to have a different game plan. MIO Spirit 8670 LM GPS Navigator is a simple unit giving good navigation at a very affordable price-a comfortable $180! Ah! The good old concept is back! Instead of blabbering a lot, let us now navigate into the details.

MIO Spirit 8670 LM GPS

MIO Spirit 8670 LM FEU Car Navigation System – Black

  • Lifetime Map Updates
  • 3D Junction see
  • Stopping help
  • Spoken road names
  • 6.2″ Touch Screen

Design:

With a tidy design, the MIO Spirit 8670 LM GPS is all set to be used straight away when pulled out of the box. The ease of use and the compact design (by compact design, I mean the size and the weight, which are 4.2×3.2×0.9 inches and 3.8 ounces respectively), makes it a handy companion whenever I am out on the road. The integrated GPS receiver discards the need of carrying an extra bulky part that can be annoying. The design actually makes it usable with multiple vehicles. Guess what? I could actually pack it in my suitcase when I am out for a vacation. I really did not find enough elements in the design to describe apart from the antenna jack (external) and a power button, which is placed on the top, and a USB port, which is placed at the bottom! Well, two more things, which need attention, are a 3.5 mm headphone jack and one SD card slot, which are placed on the right side of the device. Now that is a neat and clean design. Inevitably, a GPS device will have a screen and Mio C220 is not an exception. The unit is bundled with a TFT touch screen. It is a 65,000-color display of 3.5 inches. The screen was quite responsive to my touches! However, a problem bothered me a lot. The screen can barely be seen in broad daylight and the colors seem to fade out…So, use it under the shade!

Keyboard Talk:

I really disliked the onscreen keyboard. The keys are really small and cramped. The absence of included stylus requires you to pay close attention when you are entering the address.

Map View and Icons:

When I entered the map view, what I found was that the icons for zooming in and zooming out actually blended quite nicely with the background and something that really bothered me was that I actually had to adjust the volume by four taps through different menus. The Graphic of a little speaker on the map is nearly useless and can only be used for muting the sound! If there would be  some external features for adjusting the volume and zooming in and out gestures, it would have been better.

MIO Spirit 8670 LM GPS Features:

Using a 20SiRF starIII GPS (WAAS enabled), the MIO Spirit 8670 LM has an included 1 GB SD card which has the map of the USA preloaded on it. The unit is also capable of storing the data of the least visited places. This allowed me to have a list to choose from. For multipoint trips, the unit also allowed me to add stops along the route.

The MIO Spirit 8670 LM GPS also has a database of over 3.5 million POI (points of interest), which include ATM’s, gas stations,, lodgings, restaurants, concert halls, amusement parks and many more. This is truly awesome and I liked this feature a lot. The unit also has a dual navigation guidance, which works great. There is a text and voice guidance for directions turn-by-turn. Now, I will give a 10 star rating to the device for calculating the directions by fastest, most economical or shortest routes.

Additionally you can enjoy a 2D or 3D representation of a map. I really giggled out my happiness to find a night mode that changes the color scheme for better viewing.

A cockpit tool to show the direction of the next turn, distance to be covered to reach the destination, estimated time of arrival and some other handy features make it a useful GPS device.

Performance:

Performance-wise, the MIO Spirit 8670 LM has a slow start and takes nearly three minutes to capture the satellite fix. The receiver was indeed a good performer, which did a great job by keeping a lock on the GPS fix. The device has a great deal of accuracy. The inbuilt lithium-ion battery is estimated to have a runtime of 4.5 hours. The device also has an inbuilt memory of 256 MB. The TFT screen has a resolution of 320×240 pixels, which is good enough for a small device like this.

Conclusion:

MIO Spirit 8670 LM GPS

This portable navigation system is good enough for experienced users, as they will know how to handle it. If you are a first time user, make sure that you carry it under the shade so that you do not complain about the blurred screen under the sun!

Humminbird Fish Finder Helix 7 Reviews

Hey, let us go for a day’s outing in the inland waters and catch some fishes. We can fry them for our dinner and relish with some fine champagne! Don’t worry, the Humminbird Fish Finder Helix 7 is there for your help and more importantly, I am there for your rescue! I guess, it is enough of kidding and especially if you learn about my waterways experience in the past, I am surely going to enjoy a dinner with some extraterrestrial creature on the farthest end of the Milky Way since I will be out of this earth because of a kick from you! Ouch… it hurts!

But honestly speaking, I feel far more confident when I am out in the inland waters and I know that I will be back home safe and sound unless I receive a huge kick from a Tsunami or something else of that kind. The DualBeam PLUS sonar of the Humminbird Fish Finder Helix 7 makes my life easy and the built-in UniMap adds up to my confidence. Guess what? I never found so much success while fishing before without the aid of Humminbird 410940. Until last week, people used to call me a novice fisherman! Even my wife was not an exception! Sad, isn’t it?

Into the Feature Details:

The Humminbird 383C is an amazing fishfinder which is preloaded with advanced sonar and built-in maps to help a fisherman. The Humminbird 410940 GPS receiver with 16 channel WAAS technology is a treat for everyone. The antenna is omnidirectional and delivers a high performance every single time I am out on the waters! The most amazing fact is that the Humminbird 383C has a built-in UniMap which has a resolution of 4 nautical miles. The UniMap gives the details of the inland lakes of the USA and details of the coastal areas and the rivers are inbuilt. Completely waterproof, the Humminbird Fish Finder Helix 7 operates at a very low voltage, and the power eaten up by the unit is as low as DC 10 – 20 V. With over 3000 waypoints the Humminbird 410940 GPS receiver unit features 50 routes, 50 tracks GPS, and 20,000 track log points. That is simply amazing! If you have a different view, please let me know as I will like to know the reason behind the difference. The advanced DualBeam PLUS sonar features sonar echo enhancement, TrueArch, and Selective Fish ID+.

A Bit of Operational Details:

The operational details I found in the Humminbird Fish Finder Helix 7 were simply amazing and I guess that once you come across the details, you are surely going to love this and the desire to own the unit will be set ablaze. Garmin zumo 396 LMT-S GPS Motocycle Review

Garmin zumo 396 LMT-S GPS Motocycle Review

Waiting for the Garmin zumo 396 LMT-S was a bit long but it paid off! Released nearly a year after the TomTom Rider had hit the market, the Zumo 396 LMT-S has a bit of wonderful stuff to attract your attention. I will not call myself to be a rich fellow but somehow I managed to adorn my garage with a car and a bike but I have a soft corner for the boy with two wheels and love to be with him most of the time. No! Don’t get me, wrong fellows… I was just talking about my bike. And now the Garmin zumo 396 LMT-S has given that extra bit of gloss to my little friend and guess what, it has become a super cool dude in no time. Thanks, Garmin!

Out of the Box:

Out of the box, the Garmin zumo 396 LMT-S Motorcycle GPS navigation system for the bikers has left a lot to be desired with other GPS systems. The surprise element was the boat-loaded box! So, here is what I found in the box: the amount for the bikes, a plastic adhesive car mount to fix the navigation unit on the dashboard (just in case someday I have a bit more affection for my four-wheeler), black colored faceplates made of plastic (in case the gray color annoys you), car charger, a power cable which connects to the battery of the bike, an AC adapter, a USB cable to use it with the computer, tools needed for mounting the Zumo 396 LMT-S GPS on the handles of the bike, City Navigator DVD, a screwdriver for the unit’s “safety screw”, owners’ manual or Automatic Installation, quick setup guide and some stickers. Well, isn’t that a boat-load? For me it is and I guess that same applies to you. But something I missed was a Bluetooth earpiece. But I guess that the company did a great thing by concentrating on the unit itself and not on a thing which is readily available in the market!

  • Access free Live administrations for traffic and climate utilizing the cell phone connect application
  • Garmin Adventurous Routing finds awe-inspiring or bumpy streets; limits significant expressways

Let Us See The Design:

SEXY! A silver shell along with a couple of removable caps, one place on the top and the other at the bottom so that you can customize the design. And, this cool dude has an IPX7 standard. So, if you accidentally drop it in water, it will come out unhurt from a depth of three feet. But more than 30 minutes and better luck with a new zumo 396 LMT-S GPS Motorcycle. The unit possesses a sturdy shell but for added security, there is a safety screw! The screen of the unit is a bit on the smaller end with a size of 3.5 inches but is UV resistant and touch screen. It allows for choosing large icons. A real handy feature! You can turn on the GPS device by pressing the power button for a couple of seconds, which is place carefully on the right-hand lower corner! Four other buttons on the left allow a plethora of functions like zoom in and zoom out, menu scrolling, volume control, and many more! There is an SD expansion slot, USB port, and amount connector of 24 pins. Guess what? There are many other features!

GPS Maps Navigation:

Garmin zumo 396 LMT-S has a high sensitive GPS receiver and preloaded North American map that helps in proper navigation. The menu is quite simple and all that I had to do was to select the one that I wanted and then I had to either go to the submenu or just put in the details and that is all! The navigation unit gave turn-by-turn as well as voice-guided directions. Additionally, the Garmin zumo GPS has TTS (text to speech) functionality. Among the other options are the automatic route calculations, detour, POI database of over 6 million POIs, and also provides real-time traffic updates via Total Traffic Network of Clear Channel but alas! You need to buy a traffic receiver, which is compatible with GPS Garmin zumo. Everything cannot be given right? Whether you are a 2D lover or a 3D lover, see the GPS maps in a way you want! I prefer it to be 3D. The integrated Bluetooth helps you to make hands free phone calls with the unit and your mobile once they are paired!

Well, a couple of glitches always remain and you accept them. In the case of Garmin GPS zumo 396 LMT-S, some of the POIs are outdated but the detour can recalculate a more realistic tour but the calculations are a bit slow. Hopefully, Garmin will fix this. However, I was quite happy to shell out $399 for this wonderful boy!

Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS Review

Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS Review

We all know that technology is on the roll and it helps us in numerous ways. Yes, some Stone Age guys may say that technology leads to disaster. But, does that mean that we need to avoid it and call it as one of the most bizarre alien concepts? Not really! When it can do good, use it to make the good, better! This thought really pulled me out of the nutshell to look into the box of Magellan Roadmate.

The General Feel of The Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS

The first thing that captured my curious eyes was the piano-black casing made of plastic. The BIG 4.7 inch screen was a sheer pleasure to look at as the buttons on the screen looked big and the text was easier to read! Phew… At last! The possibility of malfunctioning external buttons is discarded. The unit did not keep any external button except for the power switch (placed on the top of the unit). All operations are to be done by the touch screen. Coming to back panel, did an outstanding job to impart a crisp look by using a silver plastic of matt-color!

Speaker and Dimensions of Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS:

When it comes to navigating through the roads, voice navigation is the most convenient form. I guess that everyone will agree to the fact. Looking at the screen and then concentrating back on the road can be a problem for some people. I am a newbie and due to this, it is at least difficult for me. Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS was probably designed to meet the requirements of people like me! This GPS navigation unit has an in-built speaker placed at the rear left-hand corner of the unit. It is bigger than other GPS navigation units available in the market. Ah! What I like most is the crisp and clear sound. It never gets distorted even at high volumes. Now, if you want your eyes to do a lot of exercises and switch randomly between the screen and the road, the big screen accommodated in the 5.2 x 0.7 x 3.3 inches unit will surely solve your purpose.

Technical Aspects:

This was kind of a surprise for me. The unit has a mounted Micro SD card slot but the card is not necessary to use the navigation unit itself! The only reason to use the slot is for backing up and restoring data. Also there is a USB connector, which is used to power up the unit either from the power adapter cable of the vehicle or you can also use the AC power adapter, which is optional.

The Mount:

The Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS comes with two types of mount. One can be used to mount the unit on the windshield and the other one (adhesive mount) can be used to mount the unit on the dashboard. The windshield mount has a lever at the base. I was really impressed with the design and elegance. The lever ensures that the suction cup is secured to the windshield and the mount has a cradle that is used to keep the GPS unit in place. The cradle has a tab and when I lowered the unit, the slot on the back of the unit was aligned with the tab and finally rested on the foot of the cradle.

Design Flaw:

One thing I really found annoying is that the GPS unit needs to be connected to the USB power cable so as to make it work. The port where the power cable is to be plugged in is at the bottom of the unit. Once the unit is mounted on the cradle, the port goes out of sight and it can be difficult to plug the cable. I tried plugging the cable first and then mounting the device. I was awarded with frustration as that was not possible. I hope that Magellan will fix this.

Using the device:

When I powered the device by sliding the power button, it took 34 second to start and then prompted to select the language, time zone and measurement unit and then renders it as ‘ready to use’.

Functionality of Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS:

Navigating with the GPS device was sheer pleasure for me. The quick spell function of the device allowed to find the city I was looking for from a list of cities and then entering the street address was another fun stuff. The quick spell function allowed only entering a valid street name by fading the keys of the onscreen keyboard, which would lead to an invalid entry. The next thing that I had to do was to enter the street and the building number and tap the ‘GO’ button. It was easy and it allowed me to search for POIs (points of interests). The added advantage is that the device allows you to find alternate route when you want to avoid a particular road. This feature is not present in every GPS navigation system.

Conclusion:

Buy Magellan Roadmate 1470 GPS

I will say that the price tag for this masterpiece is quite reasonable and justified at $249.99. The comfort and ease of use ensure that the journey is comfortable and easy. I guess that everyone will like to pay for this!

GPS Maps Navigation and Transport

GPS Maps

Exploring the unknown turfs becomes easy with a map in place. The same applies to GPS maps. They make the journey easy by using advanced technologies and make sure that you never feel lost in a place unknown.

Introduction

GPS, or global positioning system if you wish, is actually a very useful little invention that has been around for quite a while. Basically, a device with GPS can tell you where you currently are and where you need to go because it can determine its location based on the position of GPS satellites. These satellites were sent into space for precisely that usage and they send regular signals to all GPS devices in the world. GPS, as its name indicates, works in the entire world and is already very well known. Many cell phones and cars are now equipped with the service. In cell phones, it is useful because the owner of the cell phone can always be located, even when in trouble, or should they suddenly disappear. Criminals with a GPS cell phone might also want to be careful. In cars, however, GPS is very useful as a mapping system. It can help the driver navigate their way around any city, town, or country when they don’t have Google Maps to hand.

How Maps Work

GPS maps are a very popular mapping system and a sought-after accessory in cars. They are programmed with information that can help identify the nature of a near-by business. This allows a car driver to look for, say, a petrol station while they are driving and they see that petrol is low, an incredibly useful function that would have been impossible to imagine some twenty or thirty years ago, when GPS access had just been granted to civilians after a long period in which it was reserved exclusively for the US military. Such a system carries the name of an automotive navigation system. Depending on the quality and nature of such a system, it can be very useful, showing you a 3G or sometimes even a real view of the environment you are currently driving in. Some systems also offer to show a bird’s eye view of the entourage.

Range of Maps Features has Actually Evolved to an Astonishing Size

Many also offer voice prompts; meaning that a voice will steer you towards your goal, telling you when to turn left, right, or just keep going and for how long. The range of features has actually evolved to an astonishing size. Even though some people have raised concerns about the safety of the system, stating that it distracts the driver and is therefore not advisable to use, there is no denying how very useful an automotive navigation system can be. So many situations come to mind where it can come in handy. Imagine you step out of a meeting in a part of town you don’t know and you are absolutely starving but know no restaurant nearby. The GPS system can help you find one. Imagine your kid calls you wanting to be picked up from a location, but you have no idea where it actually is. Simple; just type the street name into the navigation system, which will then guide you towards the place.

Automotive Navigation System

Such an automotive navigation system can undoubtedly be very useful, and it doesn’t even have to be very expensive, in fact, it comes automatically with some cars. However, do remember that obviously, the first and most important thing you should focus on is traffic. The rule that you should never be on the phone while driving without a headset is there for a reason. Any distraction decreases your reaction time, therefore increasing your risk of potentially being in an accident.

Only use your GPS system when you are sure there is nothing else in need of immediate attention. Finally, we all know Murphy’s Law, or to cite its other name, Sod’s law: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. So just in case, you have a tremendously important meeting with your superiors that will determine your future and whether you get a 50% income raise or not, just remember that technology is not infallible. Your beloved GPS system could have a glitch in it just that day, so it is probably best to check where the address of the meeting is the morning of the important day, or if you have time, the night before. This way, in case the system fails you, you are not completely lost.

Handheld GPS Device For Walkers And Adventurers

Handheld GPS Device For Walkers And Adventurers

Introduction

Time was and going anywhere on a walking trip or adventure and you’d have to take with you scores of maps and navigational equipment, none of which was particularly suited to being used in bad weather if you wanted to avoid the possibility of getting lost within the first few miles. The advent of satellite navigation, or GPS for walkers and adventurers, has changed all that, so that you can now set off on your journey with just one handheld GPS device to direct you safely from place to place. However, just what should you be looking for in a handheld GPS device if you’re a walker or adventurer and how can you get the most out of it?

Having a sturdy and waterproof case is an absolutely essential criteria to consider when choosing to buy a hand-held GPS device. A plastic case is fine, but check that it has a rubber gasket where the front and back casings meet. You’ll also find a rubber gasket to be useful when you’re operating the GPS device and it’s wet, it will give you a much better grip on the device and let you hold and operate it, pressing the buttons with just one hand. The durability of a hand-held case is where they will always score well overusing your cell phone with a GPS app.

Hand-held GPS Cases

Most hand-held GPS are powered by two AA batteries, which may or may not be rechargeable ones, so make sure the back casing is reasonably easy to remove in order to change the batteries whilst you’re out. I would avoid a hand-held GPS device that has a bespoke battery that has to be charged inside the unit, or worse from a USB port. After all, how are you going to do that in the middle of nowhere?

The front case will incorporate the screen which needs to be bright and a high-definition one so that it is clearly viewable even in strong sunlight. Obviously, a color screen should be preferred to a black and white one, but remember this will drain the batteries more quickly.

The circuit Board

Without getting into too much technical detail there are a few things to think about regarding the circuit board in a handheld GPS device. The circuit board is the heart and brains of the unit. 24 satellites orbiting the earth twice a day at 11000 km an hour create the GPS data, which is accurate to at worst 15m. However, having a WAAS-enabled circuit board, that’s Wide Area Augmentation System a US-based satellite network; and EGNOS, the European system which is now operational – means your level of accuracy will increase tremendously to within 5m at worst. There will be some memory stored on the circuit board, but the latest models also allow you to add a memory card, such as an SD card, which is useful if you want to store lots of routes or will be away for some time.

Other handheld GPS Features

You’ll be able to decide between devices with full national mapping services pre-loaded and ones that have built-in databases of maps to access on the move. Fully topographic maps can be bought for some models, but these maps are still quite expensive and, if you’re good at interpreting the ordinary maps anyway – might not give an awful lot of detail. Personally, I wouldn’t buy a hand-held GPS unless it incorporated an electronic compass and barometric altimeter, which simply saves having to carry yet more gear around with me. I’d also want one that can navigate around a route/walk using waypoints and can record my journey with a track-log, giving me information such as journey distance and speed, etc.

GPS on a Smartphone

GPS Device or Smartphone with a GPS App?

Every time the GPS device will win for a serious walker or adventurer. First off regarding the case, quite simply you won’t be able to rely on a Smartphone to be waterproof or not crack the first time it is dropped! Another plus for hand-held GPS devices over Smartphones is the battery life. With a Smartphone, you won’t have the choice of buying one that you can easily insert new/charged batteries into and have to be able to recharge its bespoke battery, which means accessing a power outlet somewhere. If you’re out in the wilderness with a purposely made GPS device you can simply insert some new batteries that you’re carrying with you.

Safety First – But Have Fun Walking With Your GPS Satellite Navigation

Safety First Using handheld GPS Device

OK, so you’ve got a sophisticated piece of equipment in your hand – but that’s no reason to leave common sense at home. If the straight line it gives you between two points is perilously close to a cliff edge or other potentially dangerous area, you just might want to think twice about how closely you’re going to follow its suggestion. You still have to interpret and understand what the device is telling you, so you could still get lost using a GPS. In which case you still need to make sure you take all the appropriate life-saving gear, that’s recommended by all of the experts. But, for all the need to be careful, most of all – have fun and enjoy yourself.

How To Use a GPS Device (Right Using GPS)

How To Use a GPS Device (Right Using GPS)

Using GPS can be difficult for those who do not refer to the handbook and are not really aware of the functions the device has to offer. Read the instructions and explore the device before using it for the purpose it is meant for…find out how!

Introduction

GPS is an acronym which is short for Global Positioning System and is a modern tracking system based on the location of over thirty satellites which have been sent into space over the past fifty years, mainly by the US military. A GPS device can calculate its own location or, in fact, the location of any given building or address, using only the signals sent to it from the GPS satellites. The whole satellite idea was inspired by the USSR who was the first to send one into space, but the US came up with the idea of GPS and perfected the system, which probably made them quite proud since that happened in times of the Cold War. In fact, civilians haven’t been able to use it for long, and it was long reserved for the military and the navy, but with technology like this, it is no wonder that when they were allowed to use it, the news about the devices spread like a virus, and nowadays, most cars and cell phones are equipped with GPS. Since 2000, the GPS system that civilians can use is just as efficient as that of the US military, which made it even more interesting to use.

Using GPS Features

A GPS Feature Checklist.

Nowadays, a GPS device will have a lot of features to it. In fact, it is a quite and useful technology that you can use for more than one thing. This is why there is more than one type of GPS device. GPS devices can be automobile navigation systems, they can be a simple cell phone with a GPS function in it, or they can be aimed at a very specific group of users, like GPS devices made to be used for hiking or sailing, so the user always knows their location and can also be found in case they get lost, which is not unlikely when practicing such a sport.

Whatever the device may be, this is some advice that goes for any GPS gadget and in fact anything technological that you buy. First, don’t be afraid to ask the shop assistant for help. If you are knowledgeable about the topic, ordering off the internet is quicker and more comfortable, but if you have no clue where to start, you’ll be quick to make a mistake online and order something you didn’t need or want in the first place, thus wasting your hard-earned money. If you are unfamiliar with what you want to purchase, it is better to take out the time and go to a shop. Approach an assistant, state what kind of device you want and what you want it to be able to do, and hopefully he or she should come up with something. Remember though that most shop assistants do get a sales commission, so make sure you really need all the features of the gadget they recommend you, and also that there isn’t a similar model at half the price one shelf below the one recommended to you. Think; if you will be using the GPS for sailing, a water-proof device might be good but you would not necessarily need a glow-in-the-dark device to use in your car.

Basic Rules of GPS Devices

Once you have bought the device, it might be a good idea to open the handbook and read it. True, a lot of functions you can guess, but you might also miss out on some by just trying to work things out on your own. As a basic rule, most devices with a GPS will be able to tell you where you are when you press some button or other. They will also be able to tell you where something else is if you tell them what you are looking for by typing it in. Other functions will depend on the system. For automobile use, it is likely that you will be able to switch to 3D view, for example, or look for a certain type of business located near the place you are in. A marine GPS, to be used when sailing, might provide information like water depth or other characteristics. Most GPS systems are also able to measure distances. Know what your gadget can do, then all that is left is making use of its full potential.

How a GPS Device Works

How a GPS Device Works

How GPS Device Function?

What is the technology they use? Nothing more than the satellites! They synchronize with the 24 operational satellites and fix up some errors arising out of the obstacles which are either man-made or natural. Find more below…

GPS is short for Global Positioning System, and that captures well what it does: it indicates your position on the globe. The way GPS operates is a fascinating tale that doesn’t require advanced mathematics to understand.

Before looking into the details of how navigation systems work, it’s helpful to have some general knowledge of how certain positions on earth are specified. The classic view provides one that’s easy to visualize.

Imagine a simple grid that wraps the globe ‘vertically’ originating at the earth’s North Pole and stretching out over to the South Pole. Then add ‘horizontal’ lines that cross the globe at right angles to the vertical lines. That grid is the familiar longitude and latitude ‘mesh’ that can be found on every school room globe and map. Each line of lat and long is divided in degrees that specify how far along a line you are located.

Now, what does the ‘mesh’ have to do with the GPSes system?

The U.S. Air Force maintains 24 different operational GPS satellites (with 3 spares). Each satellite has the electronics and software installed to calculate its own location, most importantly the distance to the Earth. It does that by sending a radio beam out and registering the time needed to hit the Earth where the signal is picked up by ground stations.

A simple formula is: distance = velocity * time, and that describes it pretty straightforward. Radio waves travel at the speed of light (~186,00 mph or ~300,000 kph) and the electronics measure the delay from when the beam is sent to when it hits the target.

Satellites (and ground stations) can measure that delay accurately because they have computers synchronized by atomic clocks that are able to measure time incredibly accurately. GPS Receivers don’t have atomic clocks included but perform some tricks to compensate.

Also because of variations in the atmosphere, the motion of the satellites, reflections from buildings, and other imperfections GPS have to make up for small calculation errors in order to get the precision needed to locate your GPS receiver to within a few meters.

Distance provides only one important factor in GPS. Imagine you’re told you are 600 miles east of Los Angeles. That puts you in the center of a circle of radius 600 miles, with LA somewhere on the circumference (the rim). But you don’t know exactly where. Now you’re told you are also few hundred miles north of Las Vegas and another circle is created. Those two circles intersect at two points. A third intersecting circle will place you at exactly one unique point (to within measurement accuracy).

Satellites and GPSes Receivers

Since the GPS system is dependent on satellites in space that interact with ground stations, it operates in three dimensions, not just the two provided by the surface of the Earth. So, the Global Positioning System works with spheres rather than circles. The calculations are more complex, but the idea is the same. Where the surfaces of four spheres intersect they calculate a certain point, the location point of the GPS device.

Your GPS receiver is designed to ‘listen’ for the signals from four of those satellites and uses the info provided to determine your latitude and longitude. It overlays that unique point onto a map that resembles your surrounding area to help you to navigate your way to anywhere in the world.

Personal GPS Tracking Device

I never realized just how helpful would a personal GPS tracking device be. A personal GPS tracker is very useful in case you hike often to remote locations. I utilize it on a regular basis when I go in foreign countries given that I’m one who likes discovering new places on my own with solely the help of a GPS unit and compass. I likewise carry it in my automobile regularly as a safeguard in case my motor vehicle gets taken. I furthermore know some individuals who utilize a personal GPS tracking device to enable them to spy where their spouse or kids are going. I’m not really indicating this is the correct thing to do, but it is actually beneficial to know that you may likewise utilize a personal GPS tracking device in this manner.

GPS covers a large area of communication concept. Understanding it is very difficult. But here a brief idea is given about it. After reading it one can understand what is GPS is all about. But still many information is there to know about it.

I saw a segment about the Global Positioning Satellite Devices in space and according to Stephen Hawking’s, Into the Universe, the effects of time goes slower closer to earth than in space. Gravity has an effect on time in which it slows time down. So basically, these GPS satellites are “getting older” faster than objects/humans on Earth.
